Plant Psychedelics

DMT

Found in hundreds of plant species and produced endogenously in the human brain. Smoked, it lasts 10–15 minutes. In ayahuasca, it lasts 4–6 hours. Both routes produce experiences that most people struggle to put into words — and that's not hyperbole.

N,N-Dimethyltryptamine Ayahuasca The spirit molecule 5-MeO-DMT (distinct) 10–15 min smoked · 4–6 hr oral

Two completely different experiences from one molecule

Smoked or vaporized DMT produces the most intense psychedelic experience available — complete dissolution of consensus reality within 30–60 seconds, lasting 10–15 minutes. People report contact with entities, geometric hyperspace, time dissolution, and experiences that feel more real than ordinary waking life. You are physically incapacitated during this time.

In ayahuasca (DMT combined with an MAO inhibitor, traditionally Banisteriopsis caapi), the experience extends to 4–6 hours with a completely different character — more narrative, more emotional, more embodied. Ayahuasca traditions from the Amazon basin span centuries and carry cultural, spiritual, and therapeutic significance.

⚠ 5-MeO-DMT is a different substance

5-MeO-DMT (found in Bufo alvarius / Incilius alvarius toad venom and some plants) is structurally related but pharmacologically distinct. It's significantly more potent, produces a different experience (non-visual, ego-obliterating), and carries higher physical risk including respiratory depression and seizures. Do not treat dosing information for N,N-DMT and 5-MeO-DMT as interchangeable. They are different drugs.

How DMT works

5-HT2A agonism

Like all classical psychedelics, DMT's primary mechanism is serotonin 2A receptor agonism. The intensity and speed of onset when smoked reflects rapid, high-concentration receptor binding.

Sigma-1 receptor

DMT is a sigma-1 receptor agonist — a unique property among psychedelics. Sigma-1 receptors are involved in cellular stress response, neuroprotection, and neuroplasticity. This may explain some of DMT's distinctive experiential qualities.

MAO breakdown

DMT is rapidly broken down by monoamine oxidase (MAO) in the gut — which is why you can't eat it and trip. Ayahuasca works by combining DMT with MAO inhibitors (harmine, harmaline from B. caapi) that block this breakdown, making it orally active.

Endogenous DMT

DMT is produced naturally in the human body — confirmed in the pineal gland and other tissues. Its endogenous function remains unknown. The popular claim that it's released during death or near-death experiences is not established science.

Smoked / vaporized N,N-DMT

These doses are for freebase N,N-DMT, smoked or vaporized. Ayahuasca dosing is determined by the brew preparation and is not reducible to mg of DMT — it depends on the MAOI content and ratio. If you're drinking ayahuasca, dosing is the facilitator's domain, not yours.

Threshold

5–10mg

Subtle visual changes, color enhancement, body tingling. A taste of the headspace without full immersion. Good for calibrating your vaporization technique before committing to a larger dose.

Moderate

15–25mg

Strong visuals with eyes open and closed. Geometric patterns, color intensification, altered sense of space. You're still aware of your body and surroundings. Many people find this range deeply satisfying without the intensity of a breakthrough.

Breakthrough

30–50mg

Complete departure from consensus reality. The room disappears. Entity contact, hyperspace geometry, time dissolution. You will be physically incapacitated for 10–15 minutes. Lie down before inhaling. A sitter is essential.

⚠ Technique matters enormously

DMT freebase requires precise vaporization temperature — too hot and it burns (harsh, reduced potency, unpleasant), too cold and it doesn't vaporize. Most failed DMT experiences are technique failures, not dose failures. An electronic mesh vaporizer or purpose-built device provides the most consistent results. Open flame methods (sandwich method, freebase pipe) waste significant material and are harder to dose accurately.

Different routes, different experiences

Smoked / Vaporized

Onset: 30–60 seconds. Peak: 3–5 minutes. Total: 10–15 minutes. The most intense psychedelic experience per unit of time. Complete reality replacement at breakthrough doses. Physically safe but psychologically extreme.

Ayahuasca (oral + MAOI)

Onset: 30–60 minutes. Peak: 1–2 hours. Total: 4–6 hours. Narrative, emotional, embodied. Purging (vomiting, diarrhea) is common and considered part of the process in traditional settings. Significant MAOI dietary and drug interaction considerations.

Pharmahuasca (oral + pharmaceutical MAOI)

Same principle as ayahuasca using pharmaceutical MAO inhibitors instead of plant-based ones. More precise dosing but carries the same MAOI interaction risks. Not safer just because the components are measured — MAOI contraindications still apply fully.

Changa (DMT + MAOI herb blend)

Smokeable blend of DMT infused onto MAOI-containing herbs (usually B. caapi leaf). Extended duration (15–40 minutes) compared to pure DMT. Smoother onset, less abrupt. Considered more approachable by many users. Dose varies by blend ratio.

What you need to know

Physiologically, smoked DMT is remarkably safe. Non-toxic, non-addictive, impossibly short duration. The body clears it in minutes. The risk is entirely psychological — and it's real. A challenging DMT experience can be profoundly disorienting.

You will be physically incapacitated at breakthrough doses. Lie down before inhaling. Have a sitter hold your pipe/vaporizer. Do not attempt this sitting up in a chair — you will drop things, possibly yourself.

MAOI interactions are the primary physical danger. Ayahuasca, pharmahuasca, and changa all involve MAO inhibition. SSRIs, SNRIs, tramadol, dextromethorphan, stimulants, and tyramine-rich foods can all produce dangerous interactions including serotonin syndrome and hypertensive crisis. If you're on any psychiatric medication, ayahuasca is contraindicated without medical guidance.

Psychosis contraindication is the same as all classical psychedelics. Personal or family history of schizophrenia or psychosis. Hard stop.

Ayahuasca ceremony vetting matters. The boom in ayahuasca tourism has created a market of unqualified facilitators. Ask about their training lineage, medical screening process, MAOI dietary protocols, and what happens if someone has a medical emergency. A real facilitator welcomes these questions.

Integration is especially important. Breakthrough DMT experiences can be deeply destabilizing to your worldview. Give yourself time. Talk to someone with psychedelic experience. Don't rush to explain or categorize what happened.

Know Before You Go

Smoked DMT: 10–15 minutes, most intense psychedelic experience available. Lie down. Have a sitter.

5-MeO-DMT is a different drug. Do not use N,N-DMT dosing information for 5-MeO-DMT.

MAOI interactions are the primary physical danger. SSRIs + ayahuasca = serotonin syndrome risk.

Vaporization technique matters more than dose. Most failed experiences are technique failures.

Vet ayahuasca facilitators thoroughly. Ask about medical screening and emergency protocols.
